Mike Tyson has told Jermall Charlo directly to his face that he should be fighting better opposition while waiting for a potential showdown with Canelo Alvarez.
Canelo has this year signed to fight Dmitry Bivol in May, then Gennady Golovkin in September, and is also planning a potential third fight in December which could be against Ilunga Makabu.
In the meantime, he has suggested that some of the other fighters waiting around to face him should share the ring with one another.
However, Charlo’s next fight will be against Maciej Sulecki as a potential bout with Jaime Munguia fell through.
Another boxer hoping to face Canelo is Mexican-American David Benavidez.
The highly rated former super-middleweight champion is unbeaten, like Charlo, but yet to face world class opposition.
Tyson asked Charlo on his Hotboxin’ Podcast: “Benavidez, would you fight him?”
Charlo answered without hesitation: “I’ll fight him for sure, yeah.”
To which Tyson replied: “Then why are they not letting you fight this guy?
“This guy’s got me calling him the Mexican monster.
“Everybody’s scared of this guy and they’re saying you don’t wanna fight him.”
Charlo then said: “Nah, it’s just that his value is low, he’s not worth as much as–“
At this point Tyson interrupted and shouted: “Ah, goddamn man.”
Charlo tried to explain: “I’d rather get one of the best in the world right now that’s got a belt.”
Tyson asked: “So why are you not fighting Canelo?”
Charlo replied: “I’m waiting, we’ve been calling Canelo out for five or six years already.”
Tyson said: “So fight the next best guy, the Mexican monster, Benavidez.”
Charlo responded: “He ain’t no Mexican monster.”
Tyson interrupted: “Everybody’s scared of him, nobody fights him.”
Charlo said: “We’re not, we’re not scared of no human on Earth.”
Tyson then concluded by telling Charlo to look down the camera and call Benavidez out directly.
Instead, Charlo issued a vague call-out and refused to name names.
