"Mike Tyson Fight Night" being held at Empire State Plaza Convention Center

Former heavyweight champion Mike Tyson will appear on July 22 and 23 at the Empire State Plaza Convention Center in Albany, where he began his professional boxing career 37 years ago, according to Cage Wars, which bills itself as the nation’s leading mixed martial arts promotion.

Cage Wars announced on its social media channels that “Mike Tyson Fight Night” will be held at the convention center with professional boxing on Friday, July 22 and professional and amateur mixed martial arts on July 23.

“And yes, the Greatest Heavyweight Champ of all time will be IN THE BUILDING #MikeTyson,” the post read.

Tyson’s first pro fight was a first-round technical knockout of Hector Mercedes at the convention center on March 6, 1985. Tyson, who trained in Catskill, fought his next two fights at the same location and had several of his early bouts in the Capital Region before becoming the undisputed heavyweight champion.
