The Hangover‘ turned into a monster success. Sure, it changed the careers of the main cast, but it also did wonders for Mike Tyson’s image. At the time, he was spiraling behind the scenes and in addition, his funds were very low.

Tyson recalls meeting the cast for the first time at a club and according to his own words, he doesn’t remember much of the ordeal due to his lifestyle at the time.

“So I went in there, I’m checking these guys to see what they’re doing in my section. It was Zach, the other guy, and he said, ‘We’re going to be in a movie with you’ and I said, ‘Yeah? When?’ And he said, ‘Tomorrow,’” Tyson recalled.

“And I didn’t know as I was drinking and smoking back then, doing drugs so I didn’t know I was involved in the movie. So eventually I had to go and do the movie, and it was a success.“

Later on, Mike would add more to the story of why he joined the film, stating alongside ESPN Radio that he did so for extra funds in support of his bad habits.

“I was doing that to supply my drug habit. I’m sorry I’m coming at you guys like this… I said, ‘Wow, This is going to be really good. We’re going to sell this stuff on 42nd street on bootleg and make a lot of money.’ This is my best thinking on drugs… It wasn’t that way. It was an international success.”

Ultimately, doing the film was a great decision as it put him back on the map, while allowing him to realize that it was time to change things in his personal life.

Mike Tyson Mocked Todd Phillips For Teaching Him How To Punch

During the film, in between takes, there is a hilarious moment that takes place between Mike Tyson and Todd Phillips. Mike was having a blast on-set, but it was his first time in a film. Therefore, Todd was trying to give him a few pointers, though one of them didn’t exactly sound right, as he was telling Tyson how to punch… the same guy the built a career laying people out.

Phillips recalled the hilarious story. “There’s a particular way to throw a punch in a movie,” Phillips said on The Late Late Show with James Corden.

“He kept kind of doing it wrong for camera, in fact, he was sort of pulling it back too far.

“I’m sort of showing him how to throw a punch, and without missing a beat, he goes ‘Oh this is great, I’m getting boxing lessons from the captain of the Jewish debating team.”

The cast had a blast with the insult, calling “the greatest insult I ever heard.”

Tyson clearly had a blast, and it reflected on his career.

‘The Hangover’ Changed Mike Tyson’s Career

Following ‘The Hangover‘, things changed for the better in Tyson’s personal life. He started to get noticed by younger fans for his appearance in the film and in addition, he turned his health around, dropping over 100-pounds and giving up some of his past addictions.

“I became a vegan. Vegan is where no animal products. No livestock products. Nothing. I just did a lot of training and try to become more faithful in life. I wanted a different life. I felt like I was dying. I had to change my life. I am going to change everything I dislike about myself. I changed everything that I was as a human being,” he told ESPN.
