Anthony Joshua and Canelo Alvarez’s earnings revealed as they feature in Forbes top 50 highest paid athletes list

Anthony Joshua and Canelo Alvarez are the only boxers who feature on the Forbes highest paid athletes list for 2023.

In the 12-month span from May 1, 2022 and May 1, 2023, Forbes tracked income collected by the world’s top sports stars to compile their annual list.

Initially, Forbes released their top ten which only featured one professional boxer.

This was Mexico’s Canelo Alvarez, who they report earned $110million in the past year and so is ranked in the number five spot.

The 32-year-old has had two fights in that time period – a defeat to Dmitry Bivol, followed by his trilogy triumph over Gennady Golovkin.

$100million of Canelo’s earnings are said to have come from his bouts, with $10million from sponsorships and endorsements.

When the full Forbes top 50 was released, it showed that Joshua is further down the list in the number 28 spot.

They report that AJ earned $53million in the past year with $50million from his fights and $3million from sponsorships and endorsements.

Like Canelo, Joshua has also had two fights in that time period – a lucrative rematch defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in Saudi Arabia, followed by his comeback win over Jermaine Franklin.

No doubt the majority of AJ’s earnings came from his Middle Eastern venture.
