Bernadette Rostenkowski was one of the later additions to The Big Bang Theory, first joining the successful sitcom in season three as one of Penny’s co-workers at the Cheesecake Factory. In her first episode, she joins Penny and Leonard on a double-date with Howard, with the couple bonding over their equally overbearing mothers.
Bernadette marries Howard the day before he heads off to the International Space Station, despite learning about his womanizing past, and by the time the show ended she is a mother to two children and a successful microbiologist, who never hesitates to remind her Howie that she earns more than him!
Bernadette Has Five Brothers And Sisters
The marriage between Bernadette and Howard isn’t just an unlikely romantic pairing; it is also an unlikely clash of cultures. Howard Wolowitz is Jewish, while Bernadette Rostenkowski was raised in a Polish-Catholic family. Catholic families are known for having lots of kids, and the Rostenkowskis are no exception. Bernadette reveals in The Scavenger Vortex episode that she has five younger brothers and sisters who she used to have to take care of, including Joey (the only Rostenkowski sibling mentioned by name) who Bernadette had to stop from spitting in the others’ mouths.
She Lost Her Virginity In A Toyota Camry
There are some ways in which Bernadette and Howard are a match made in heaven, however. For example, both of them lost their virginities in Toyota cars! They find out that they have this in common on their first date when Bernadette is demonstrating how controlling her mother is. Mrs. Rostenkowski wouldn’t even let Bernadette ride a bicycle in case she went over a bump and lost her virginity – though the deed itself actually happened in Toyota Camry. (In Howard’s case, it was a Toyota Corolla).
Bernadette Really Dislikes Puppies
Bernadette was bitten on the face when she was younger, which explains her fear of puppies, although she seemingly has no problems with older dogs. It is Bernadette and Howard who buy Raj a Yorkshire Terrier to cheer him up after another girl breaks up with him.
They even offer to look after the pooch, who Raj named Cinnamon, when he needs a dog sitter for the weekend, though they end up losing the dog at the local park. Raj doesn’t seem to have much luck finding sitters, as when he leaves Cinnamon with Leonard and Penny, she ends up at the vets after eating chocolates.
She Was Bullied At School Because Of Her Height
The grown-up Bernadette that we see in The Big Bang Theory is more than capable of standing up for herself, and there are even some occasions when she has been accused of being a bully. There is certainly no doubt about who wears the pants in her relationship with Howard! Young Bernadette, on the other hand, was the victim of bullying at school because of her short height. Her tormentors once stole her clothes from her locker during gym and replaced them with an elf costume – but even this was too big for her!
And Blames Her Mom For Her Shortness
The guys on the show are not exactly known for their towering height; Raj is 5’7”, Leonard is 5’5” and Howard is only 5’4”. Luckily, he managed to find a girl even shorter than he is in the 4’10” Bernadette. As well as being bullied for her short stature, Bernadette has always maintained that her lack of height was all the fault of her mom. According to Bernie, the scatter-brained Debbie Rostenkowski continued to smoke cigarettes throughout the time she was pregnant.
Her Pregnancy Actually Lasted Over Ten Months
When it came to her pregnancies, things didn’t exactly go smoothly for Bernadette either. She was put on bed rest during her second pregnancy, and also found it difficult to let go of her work responsibilities when she should have been putting her feet up.
Most unusual of all, she was pregnant for almost 11 months with baby Halley! Bernadette knew she was pregnant on Valentine’s Day, and yet she didn’t give birth until the end of the year, as Halley shares a birthday with Amy on 17 December.
She Once Dated A Former Teacher
Bernadette may have been upset to learn about Howard’s sleazy behavior in the past, but she also has a few skeletons in the cupboard when it comes to previous relationships. When she and Howard bump into Glen, a former professor of hers from college, Bernadette reveals that they used to date. Howard finds himself more than a little intimidated at this news, especially because Glen stands at an impressive 6’7” in height. Howard’s pet name for his wife, Bernie, is stolen from Glen who used it in The Love Care Displacement episode.
Bernadette Used To Enter Beauty Pageants
Pretty and petite Bernadette is not exactly supermodel material, but Penny and Amy discover during a girls’ night in that a young Bernie competed in teen beauty pageants. It all starts with Bernadette mocking Penny for making her terrible gorilla movie Serial Ape-ist, but when one of Bernadette’s old pageant videos is found, she changes her mind about mocking people for their past. Nevertheless, Amy and Penny insist on playing the video, which shows a very dolled-up Bernadette competing in the 1999 Miss California Quiznos pageant.
She Had Dreams Of Becoming An Ice Dancer
Like Amy, Bernadette is just as smart as the guy in her life, and yet she can be just as girly as Penny when she puts her mind to it. As well as her secret beauty pageant history, Bernadette also had an unusual plan B for her career, had microbiology not worked out; she wanted to be an ice dancer. In one of her earliest episodes, The Gorilla Experiment, Bernadette shows an interest in Leonard’s physics work and says that if she hadn’t pursued microbiology she would have studied physics – or become an ice dancer.
The Star Necklace She Wears Is The One Howard Took Into Space
Eagle-eyed viewers will notice that in later seasons, Bernadette has replaced the cross necklace she used to wear with one which has a small star pendant instead. Fans may remember that in The Countdown Reflection, the episode in which Howard goes into space, he gives Bernadette the star necklace and tells her that he is going to take it to the International Space Station so that she has a star that has come from space. It is an uncharacteristically romantic gesture from Howard, so little wonder that Bernadette is rarely parted from her star necklace.
