Amir Tyson has parlayed his broadcast journalism education and his ringside seat to one of the world’s greatest boxers, Mike Tyson, into a career as a combat sports commentator. His dad has spoken about him on podcasts.
The twenty-something looks to have a good relationship with his famous dad, linking the sportsman’s business ventures on social media. Iron Mike is not enthusiastic about any of his children picking up his gloves and has actively discouraged his eldest.
Amir Tyson’s Parents Split When He Was Young
Amir was born August 3, 1997, the second child of the heavyweight champion and Monica Turner Tyson, a doctor. His elder sibling, born Rayna Tyson, now answers to Ramsey and identifies as transmasculine.
His mother filed for divorce on January 17, 2002. She sought alimony, child support, and sole custody of the two children. She cited Mike’s alleged adultery, which “has neither been forgiven nor condoned.”
In his twenties, Amir, taller than his dad, would challenge the prizefighter, but Mike deflected his attempts to wrestle. In an August 2021 interview, Mike theorized that it is like kids to want to defend their mother’s honor.
Mike Tyson’s Son Wanted to Be a Boxer like His Dad
In a conversation with Joe Rogan, Mike said that he did not want his children to go through what he had to as a young fighter.
He went on to explain that very few people can handle “getting humiliated in front of millions of people.”
Mike laughed at the notion of someone who went to private school having to fight someone like himself, but more seriously he added, “I took the punches so they wouldn’t have to do that.”
When Amir was 24, his father talked him out of picking up boxing professionally. He had an interest in going up against Logan Paul. Mike shared the story on his podcast in 2021:
“I said: ‘Man, just get a job. Get a real estate license. Just chill out, man. Why can’t you take advantage of your lightweight wealthiness? Just chill.'”
He went on to explain that very few people can handle “getting humiliated in front of millions of people,” adding that it is probably only one present of the population that has that ability.
Amir Tyson Found His Niche in the Sporting World
Mike Tyson’s eldest graduated from American University in Washington, D.C., in May 2019 with a degree in broadcast journalism. Amir posted in December 2022 on his work for Triller Fight Club:
“Truly honored to be commentating for my favorite fighter growing up [Manny Pacquiao].”
He has also commented on the Team Combat League. It is unknown if he ever got his real estate license, but the AU grad, who has dabbled in acting, has an eye for business. He launched the clothing line Debonair Attire a few years ago.
